Jo has worked in Manches' family department since 1999, becoming a partner in 2005. She specialises in issues which arise on the breakdown of a relationship, especially the financial implications of divorce or separation in high net worth cases, often with an international element. She also advises on the preparation of cohabitation, pre-nuptial and pre-civil partnership agreements; and has extensive experience of private law children disputes, often with a complex or novel element.
Although well experienced in litigation, Jo has a particular interest in alternatives to Court and trying to resolve family disputes using a conciliatory approach. She was one of the first lawyers in this country to train as a collaborative lawyer and she is also the only person in Manches' London office to have trained as a family mediator. A substantial proportion of Jo's case load is undertaken collaboratively, including cases involving substantial assets and/or complex elements.
In March 2009 Jo was elected onto the national committee of Resolution, the leading association of family lawyers in this country. She is Vice Chair of Resolution's ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) committee and in that role is heavily involved in initiatives to educate the government and the judiciary about the benefits of non-Court based dispute resolution. She has appeared on BBC Breakfast News, BBC News 24, Radio 4, Sky News and Channel 5 as a specialist commentator on family law issues. She has extensive links with family lawyers internationally, with a particular interest in family law in Australia.
In her spare time Jo returns to her northern roots by going to watch Manchester United.
