09.30 - A Brief Introduction to Trade Mark Registration. - Gavin Stenton, Associate, Manches LLP
Gavin will analyse the various stages of the trade mark registration process, from brand creation and clearance through to prosecution and registration. He will consider: i) why brands should be registered as trade marks; ii) what brands can be registered as trade marks; iii) when brands should be registered as trade marks; and iv) how and where brands should be registered as trade marks (filing strategy).
10.10 - Online Keyword Advertising - Infringement or New Use of Trade Marks? — Rustam Roy, Associate Manches LLP
Rustam will examine the essence of a trade mark and consider the use of trade marks in keyword advertising services marketed by search engines. He will look at recent English case law and discuss ways to protect your trade marks from abuse.

11.10 - Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights — Steven Maier, Partner and Rachael Parman, Associate, Manches LLP
Steven and Rachael will consider injunctions, damages and other remedies in IP infringement cases, including copyright and design right; trade marks and passing off; breach of confidence; defamation; privacy and data protection; and domain names.
11.50 - Maximising Protection in Relation to Employees — William Downing, Partner, Manches LLP
William will consider the rules relating to restraint of trade and confidential business information protection. He will explain i) how to draft effective restraint of trade and confidentiality clauses; ii) how to keep such clauses sound and how to monitor compliance effectively; and iii) how to enforce such clauses.

About the Speakers
Gavin Stenton is a member of Manches’ dedicated trade marks and brand protection team. He acts before the UK IPO, OHIM and WIPO for a broad spectrum of clients, ranging from small to multi-national brand owners involved in a wide variety of industry sectors including, pharma, technology, publishing, education, fashion and drinks. In addition to advising on trade mark filing and prosecution, Gavin also provides transactional and commercial advice in order to help clients fully-exploit, and maximise the value of, their brands.
Rustam Roy is a member of Manches’ technology team and advises businesses in relation to a variety of e-commerce issues related to IT , intellectual property, commercial and data protection law. He recently advised an online aggregator website in relation to the use of the company’s trade marks in keyword advertising.
Steven Maier has a City and in-house background and is highly experienced in both general commercial and IP litigation. In addition to breach of contract and negligence cases, he also handles copyright, trade mark and passing off matters, disputes concerning confidential information and defamation and trade libel. He is an appointed Expert to the Nominet. UK and WIPO panels for adjudicating domain name disputes.
Rachael Parman is a specialist in IP, media and branding work. In addition to working on complex design right matters, she regularly carries out trademark and copyright infringement work and advises on passing off, parallel importing and anti-counterfeiting matters. She has worked with a number of well known names in the retail fashion sector and through that work has developed a deep understanding of the importance of protecting a company's intellectual property rights.
William Downing is a partner and head of the employment department’s litigation team. William has recently handled a number of cases involving the enforcement of restrictive covenants and abuse of confidential information, particularly in relation to obtaining undertakings and injunctive relief. This has included advising clients in the automotive, energy, life sciences and information publishing sectors. William also advises regularly on the drafting of service agreements and contracts of employment for technology based companies.
